In November 2011, journalists, writers, intellectuals, artists, bloggers and human rights activists faced many violations of their rights, in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine, the four countries that the SKeyes Center for Media and Cultural Freedom monitors.
The assassination of Syrian photographer, Farzat Jerban, was undeniably the most violent exaction. Syrian security forces severely tortured Jerban before ripping out his eyes and killing him. Another major incident took place in Amman, where a group of assailants stormed into Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad’s headquarters, threatened the employees and attacked one of the distributors. Protestors also broke into the “Al-Jazeera” office in Amman, after organizing a demonstration outside the channel’s country office, while security apparatuses linked to theHamas deposed cabinet arrested many journalists and bloggers in the Gaza Strip.
